The Rainbow Mountains, officially known as Zhangye Danxia, are located in Gansu Province, northwestern China, within the Zhangye National Geopark. This protected area spans about 322 square kilometers. The formation started approximately 24 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era, when layers of red sandstone, siltstone, and other sediments were deposited in desert and lake environments. Tectonic activity from the Eurasian Plate later uplifted the region, and water and wind erosion sculpted the layers, exposing the vibrant colors.
The colors result from the mineral composition of each layer. Deep red comes from hematite (iron oxide), while yellows and oranges derive from limonite. Green and blue hues indicate chlorite and other silicates. The alternating bands create a horizontal striped pattern resembling a rainbow, but they are actually well-preserved geological strata. The arid climate helps preserve the colors by reducing chemical weathering.
The site gained international fame after being nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, though it has not yet been inscribed. Zhangye Danxia is one of China's most photogenic landscapes, attracting tourists worldwide. Interestingly, the visual perception of colors shifts with sunlight: at dawn and dusk, tones appear warmer and more intense. To protect the formation, walkways and viewing platforms have been installed to minimize trampling damage.
