aconcagua argentina in editorial style

Mount Aconcagua, in Argentina, is the highest peak in the Americas and one of the most challenging destinations for mountaineers worldwide.

About this subject

Aconcagua, at 6,961 meters (22,838 feet), is the highest mountain outside Asia and the highest point in both the Southern and Western Hemispheres. It is located in the Andes mountain range in Mendoza Province, Argentina, near the border with Chile. Geologically, it formed from the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate about 80 million years ago, with its composition primarily sedimentary and volcanic rock. Although not technically challenging, its extreme altitude demands careful acclimatization and unpredictable weather with strong winds and freezing temperatures. The first recorded ascent was in 1897 by Swiss mountaineer Matthias Zurbriggen. The surrounding Aconcagua Provincial Park protects a diverse ecosystem, including condors and guanacos, as well as Inca archaeological sites, as the mountain was considered sacred by indigenous peoples. Today, thousands of climbers attempt the summit each year via routes such as the Normal Route (also called the Argentine Route) and the Polish Glacier Route.
