A hydrogen fueling station is a refueling point for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which convert hydrogen into electricity. Hydrogen is stored in cryogenic or high-pressure tanks (350 to 700 bar) and transferred to the vehicle via a specialized dispenser. The process takes 3 to 5 minutes, similar to gasoline refueling, and offers a driving range comparable to conventional cars.

Currently, most stations are concentrated in countries like Japan, South Korea, Germany, and the United States, especially in California. According to the Hydrogen Council, there were about 1,000 operational stations worldwide in 2023, with plans to expand to 10,000 by 2030. Brazil, though still incipient, has pilot projects in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro focused on bus fleets.

Hydrogen can be produced in several ways: by electrolysis of water using renewable energy (green hydrogen), from natural gas with carbon capture (blue hydrogen), or through chemical processes. About 95% of current global production is gray hydrogen (derived from fossil fuels without capture), but the trend is towards green hydrogen, which emits only water vapor.

The main barrier to mass adoption is cost: a station can cost between US$1 million and US$2 million, along with logistical challenges of transport and storage. However, governments and automakers are investing in the technology as an alternative to decarbonize heavy sectors such as trucks, trains, and even aviation.
