Niagara Falls, on the border between the USA and Canada, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, with an average flow of 2,800 m³/s.
About this subject
Niagara Falls is located on the Niagara River, which forms part of the border between New York State (USA) and Ontario (Canada). The complex consists of three waterfalls: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls, the latter being the most famous and imposing, with a height of about 57 meters and a width of 790 meters. The average flow rate is approximately 2,800 cubic meters per second, but during peak summer it can reach 5,700 m³/s.
The falls were formed about 12,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, when melting ice fed the Great Lakes and the Niagara River began eroding the rocky escarpment. Since then, the falls have retreated about 11 kilometers upstream, a process that continues today at a rate of approximately 30 centimeters per year.
Tourism in the region began in the early 19th century and now attracts over 14 million visitors annually. Besides the stunning view, visitors can take boat tours like the Maid of the Mist, which sails to the base of the falls, or explore the caves behind the water curtain. Nighttime illumination of the falls and seasonal fireworks are additional attractions.
A historical curiosity: in 1901, teacher Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel and survive. Since then, several attempts have been made, some fatal. Today, the practice is prohibited by law.
