About this subject
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, officially named Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque, is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Inaugurated in 2007, it was designed by British architect Yusef Abdelki, blending Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid styles. The mosque can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers, making it the largest in the UAE. Its hand-woven Persian carpet, crafted by 1,200 artisans, covers 5,627 square meters and is the largest in the world. The 82 white marble domes and four minarets standing 107 meters dominate the skyline. The marble, imported from Macedonia and Italy, covers the walls and is inlaid with semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli and mother of pearl. The 96 Swarovski crystal chandeliers, including a 12-ton centerpiece in the main hall, were manufactured in Germany. The mosque is one of the few Islamic places of worship open to non-Muslims, fostering interfaith dialogue. The tomb of Sheikh Zayed, founder of the UAE, lies in the courtyard, with soft lighting highlighting the Arabic calligraphy on the walls.
