The dome of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, 83 meters high, is a landmark of Romano-Byzantine architecture and offers one of the broadest views of the French capital.
About this subject
The dome of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is the crowning feature of one of Paris's most visited churches, perched atop the Montmartre hill. Built between 1875 and 1914, the basilica was designed in Romano-Byzantine style, inspired by Saint-Front Cathedral in Périgueux and Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The central dome, 83 meters high, rests on a drum pierced with windows that illuminate the interior.
The exterior of the dome is clad in the same travertine stone from Château-Landon that gives the basilica its signature white color. This stone, when exposed to rain and sun, releases calcite, keeping it bright despite Parisian pollution. Climbing the 300 steps to the top of the dome is a rewarding experience: the panoramic view stretches from central Paris to the suburbs, reaching up to 50 kilometers on clear days.
Historically, the basilica was conceived as an act of national penance after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Its dome, visible from many parts of the city, has become a symbol of French religious and cultural identity. The interior of the dome features a mosaic of Christ in Glory surrounded by religious figures, created by artist Luc-Olivier Merson. The site also houses one of France's largest bells, the Savoyarde, weighing 19 tons.
