Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are essential blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues.

Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are the most abundant cells in human blood, responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to all body tissues. Red blood cell count and morphology are key parameters in blood tests, aiding in the diagnosis of anemias, chronic infections, kidney problems, and other disorders.

Interestingly, while mammalian red blood cells are anucleate, other vertebrates such as birds and reptiles have nucleated, oval-shaped erythrocytes. The evolutionary loss of the nucleus in mammals allowed greater flexibility and oxygen-carrying capacity, but made the cells dependent on glucose for energy, as they cannot perform complete aerobic respiration.
