The autogyro, also known as a gyrocopter, is a rotary-wing aircraft that combines features of helicopters and airplanes, using a free-spinning rotor for lift and a propeller for thrust.

The autogyro was invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva in 1923 as an attempt to create a safer aircraft that would not stall. Unlike a helicopter, the autogyro's rotor is not powered; it spins freely due to upward airflow (autorotation) while the aircraft is pushed forward by a conventional propeller driven by an engine. This gives the autogyro extremely stable and safe flight characteristics, even at low speeds, because the rotor continues to provide lift even if the engine fails, allowing a controlled descent.
