Butchart Gardens in Canada is a historic botanical garden complex set in a former limestone quarry on Vancouver Island.

About this subject

Butchart Gardens is located in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, about 23 km north of Victoria. The site was originally a limestone quarry operated by Robert Pim Butchart's cement company. In 1904, after the quarry was exhausted, his wife Jennie Butchart began transforming the barren pit into a garden, now known as the Sunken Garden. Over the years, the gardens expanded and now cover more than 22 hectares (55 acres). They are divided into several themed areas, including the Rose Garden, Italian Garden, Japanese Garden, and Mediterranean Garden. The property was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2004 and attracts over one million visitors annually. During summer, there are fireworks displays and evening concerts. The long exposure technique mentioned in the tags may capture water movement in fountains or flower motion in the wind, but the main subject of the image is the lush, meticulously maintained landscape that blends natural elements with landscape design.
