A supercell tornado is a type of severe thunderstorm characterized by a persistent rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. Unlike ordinary storms, supercells have an organized structure that favors tornado formation. They occur mainly in the region known as Tornado Alley, spanning parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska in the United States. Supercells are estimated to be responsible for about 90% of violent tornadoes (F3 or higher on the Fujita scale).

Visually, a supercell exhibits a dark, rotating wall cloud at its base, which can give rise to a funnel. Rotation is visible on Doppler radar imagery. The Fujita scale classifies tornadoes from F0 (weak) to F5 (devastating). The deadliest U.S. tornado was the 1925 Tri-State Tornado, which traveled 352 km and killed 695 people. Although less frequent, Brazil also records tornadoes, such as the one in Xanxerê (Santa Catarina) in 2015, rated F2.

Impacts include building destruction, fallen trees, and risk of death. Safety recommendations include seeking shelter in basements or interior rooms without windows. Doppler radar monitoring enables early warnings. Interestingly, despite their association with the U.S., tornadoes can occur on every continent except Antarctica, but the air mass combination in the U.S. is particularly favorable.
