Stalingrad ruins: witnesses to the bloodiest battle of World War II, which marked the decisive turning point against Nazi Germany.

About this subject

The Battle of Stalingrad (1942, 1943) was the confrontation between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union for control of the industrial city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd). It lasted 199 days, from August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943, and resulted in about 2 million deaths among soldiers and civilians. The city was almost completely destroyed by bombing and house-to-house combat.

The ruins of Stalingrad became a symbol of Soviet resistance. Buildings such as the Stalingrad Tractor Factory and the Pavlov's House were scenes of fierce fighting. Pavlov's House, an apartment building, was defended by 23 Soviet soldiers for 58 days, becoming a legendary landmark. General Friedrich Paulus, commander of the German 6th Army, surrendered in the ruins of the Univermag department store.

After the war, the city was rebuilt on a large scale, but ruins were preserved in some memorial sites, such as the Mamayev Kurgan complex, which includes the Motherland Calls statue. The battle is considered the largest and bloodiest in history, with estimated losses of over 1.1 million Soviets and 800,000 Germans. The outcome changed the course of the war, halting the German advance towards the Caucasus and oil fields.
