Petra, Jordan, houses the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), a monumental rock-cut façade carved by the Nabateans in the 1st century BC.
About this subject
The Treasury of Petra, locally known as Al-Khazneh, is one of the most iconic structures at the archaeological site of Petra in southern Jordan. Carved directly into the face of a pink sandstone cliff, the monument was built by the Nabateans around the 1st century BC, possibly as the mausoleum of King Aretas IV. The façade stands approximately 40 meters high and 25 meters wide, blending Egyptian, Greek, and Eastern architectural elements. The name "Treasury" derives from Bedouin legends that pirates or Nabateans hid gold in an urn at the top of the structure; in reality, the urn is solid stone. Petra was the capital of the Nabatean kingdom, thriving as a trading hub for spices, silk, and incense between Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it. Today, Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The entrance to the Treasury is accessed through the Siq, a narrow 1.2 km long gorge, which creates a dramatic reveal of the façade as visitors round the final bend.
