Aerial view of Palm Jumeirah, an artificial archipelago shaped like a palm tree in Dubai, one of the largest engineering projects in the world.
About this subject
Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Opened in 2006, it is part of a set of three palm-shaped archipelagos, being the smallest of them. Construction used approximately 94 million cubic meters of sand and 7 million tons of rock, dredged from the sea floor and from nearby quarries. The palm shape consists of a central trunk, 16 fronds, and a crescent-shaped breakwater. The island houses luxury residences, high-end hotels like Atlantis The Palm, and a monorail connecting the trunk to the mainland. The project is a landmark of coastal engineering and a symbol of Dubai's tourism and opulence. Despite its appeal, it faced environmental challenges such as erosion and altered marine currents.
