About this subject
The Little Mermaid statue (Den Lille Havfrue) was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the Carlsberg brewery founder, after he fell in love with a ballet based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale. Sculpted by Edvard Eriksen, it was unveiled on August 23, 1913, on the Langelinie promenade. The model was ballerina Ellen Price, but since she refused to pose nude, the sculptor used his wife Eline Eriksen's body for the physique, while Price's face was used.
