The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, launched in 1931, is a watchmaking icon with a reversible case designed to protect the crystal during polo matches.

About this subject

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso was born from a challenge: British officers in India wanted a watch that could withstand polo impacts. Engineer René-Alfred Chauvot patented the reversible case system in 1931, allowing the dial to be flipped to reveal a protected metal base. The Art Deco design, with straight lines and stylized numerals, reflects the 1930s aesthetic.

The reversal mechanism slides the case over a hinged carriage, inverting the dial. Initially for protection, the back is now often personalized with engravings, enamel, or even a second dial (Reverso Duoface). The manual movement, such as the caliber 822, is renowned for its reliability.

Over the decades, the Reverso became a symbol of elegance, worn by the Duke of Windsor, Steve McQueen, and fictionally by James Bond in 'The World Is Not Enough'. The current collection includes classic versions, complications (tourbillon, perpetual calendar), and limited editions, preserving the original essence.

Trivia: despite its iconic design, production halted during the quartz crisis in the 1970s, only to return strongly in the 1990s with the mechanical watch revival. Today it is one of the most recognized models from Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the watch called Reverso?

The name Reverso comes from the reversible case system patented in 1931, allowing the dial to be flipped for protection. The word means 'to revert' in Latin.

How does the reversible case work?

Is the Reverso still in production today?

Yes, Jaeger-LeCoultre continues to manufacture the Reverso in various versions, from classic three-hand models to complicated tourbillons, keeping the original design.
