Unlike a helicopter, its main rotor is not powered during flight; it spins freely via autorotation, driven by the upward airflow. Invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva in 1923, the autogyro was the first practical and successful rotorcraft. The first flight took place on January 9, 1923, at the Cuatro Vientos Aerodrome in Madrid. De Cierva aimed to create a safe aircraft that would not stall like fixed-wing planes. His invention, the articulated rotor, solved the asymmetric lift problem by allowing blades to change their pitch angle.
