The gyrocopter, also known as autogyro, is a rotary-wing aircraft that uses autorotation to generate lift, combining features of helicopters and airplanes.
About this subject
The gyrocopter was invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva in 1923, aiming for a stall-proof aircraft. Unlike a helicopter, its main rotor is unpowered; it spins freely due to upward airflow during flight, a phenomenon called autorotation. A rear propeller provides forward thrust. This design makes the gyrocopter extremely stable and resistant to lift loss, unable to enter a spin. The most famous model is the Cierva C.30, produced in the 1930s. Today, gyrocopters are used for leisure, crop dusting, aerial surveillance, and even police patrol due to low operational costs and good maneuverability. German manufacturer AutoGyro GmbH produces modern models like the Cavalon and MTO Sport, widely exported. In Brazil, operation is regulated by ANAC, and there are pilot associations promoting recreational flights. A curiosity: the autorotation principle is the same used by helicopters in emergency landings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a gyrocopter and a helicopter?
In a helicopter, the main rotor is powered and provides lift and thrust. In a gyrocopter, the rotor spins by autorotation (airflow) and a separate propeller provides forward thrust. Gyrocopters cannot hover and are simpler and cheaper.
Is it safe to fly a gyrocopter?
Yes, it is considered very safe. Autorotation prevents stalls and spins. If the engine fails, the rotor continues spinning, allowing a controlled landing. Stability is higher than fixed-wing aircraft at low speeds.
Do I need a pilot license to fly a gyrocopter?
Yes, a specific license (e.g., PPL-G) is required. In the US, the FAA issues a Gyroplane Rating. Training includes ground school, flight hours with an instructor, and a practical test.
