The French press method is a full-immersion brewing technique that preserves natural oils and yields a full-bodied coffee.
About this subject
The French press was patented in France in 1929 by Attilio Calimani and Giulio Moneta, though earlier versions date back to 1850. It consists of a glass or stainless steel cylinder and a plunger with a metal mesh filter. Unlike filtered coffee, the French press retains essential oils, resulting in more body and aroma.
Steeping is the key step. After adding coarse-ground coffee and water at 92°C to 96°C, stir gently to ensure saturation. Standard steeping time is four to five minutes, adjustable to taste. After steeping, slowly press the plunger to separate grounds from liquid.
Coarse grinding is critical to avoid fines passing through the filter and causing bitterness. The recommended coffee-to-water ratio is 1:15 or 1:17. The method is popular in Ethiopia and across Europe, valued for giving full control over extraction. Cleaning is simple: discard grounds in organic waste and rinse with hot water.
Culturally, the French press is linked to the slow coffee movement and home brewing. While less common in commercial coffee shops, it has many enthusiasts. In Brazil, it serves as an alternative to the traditional cloth filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal grind size for a French press?
The ideal grind is coarse, similar to sea salt. Fine grinds can clog the filter and extract bitter compounds.
How long should I steep coffee in a French press?
Standard steeping time is 4 to 5 minutes. For a milder cup, try 3 minutes; for stronger, extend to 6 minutes.
Does a French press make stronger coffee?
Yes, because full immersion and the lack of a paper filter retain oils and micro-fines, resulting in a fuller body and higher caffeine content.
