Christ the Redeemer, on Corcovado mountain, is one of Brazil's most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Rio de Janeiro.

About this subject

Christ the Redeemer is a 30-meter-tall statue (including the 8-meter pedestal) depicting Jesus Christ with open arms, symbolizing embrace and peace. It stands atop Corcovado Mountain at 710 meters above sea level, dominating Rio de Janeiro's landscape and visible from many points.

Construction began in 1922 to celebrate the centennial of Brazil's independence and was completed in 1931. The project was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and executed by French sculptor Paul Landowski. The statue is made of reinforced concrete and covered with thousands of small triangular soapstone tiles, which resist weathering and give it a characteristic light color.

The monument is one of Brazil's main postcards, attracting millions of visitors annually. In 2007, it was elected one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a global poll by the New7Wonders Foundation. Beyond its religious and tourist significance, Christ the Redeemer also hosts cultural events and special lighting displays, such as during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Interestingly, the statue has been struck by lightning several times, requiring repairs and the installation of lightning rods. In 2014, a lightning bolt damaged the right thumb. Despite this, the structure remains solid and continues to be a symbol of faith and hospitality for cariocas and visitors.
