Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace that inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
About this subject
Neuschwanstein Castle is perched on a rugged hill near Füssen in southern Bavaria, Germany. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, construction began in September 1869 and was intended as a private retreat inspired by medieval legends. The king died in 1886, leaving the castle only two-thirds complete; he spent only 172 nights there.
The castle's design was created by stage designer Christian Jank, incorporating Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine elements. Interior murals depict scenes from knightly poems and operas by Richard Wagner, whom Ludwig admired greatly. The Throne Hall, modeled after the Hagia Sophia, never received an actual throne.
Attracting over 1.4 million visitors annually, Neuschwanstein is one of Europe's most famous castles. Its fairy-tale appearance inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and has been featured in numerous films and TV shows. Despite its medieval look, the castle boasted modern amenities for the 19th century, including central heating, running water, and telephones.
The castle's name means "New Swan Stone," referencing the Swan Knight from German legend. Built atop the ruins of two earlier fortresses, it is now managed by the Bavarian Palace Administration and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Royal Residences of Bavaria."
