About this calculator

The Paint Calculator is a practical tool to estimate the amount of paint needed to cover a surface. Simply enter the total area to be painted (in square meters), the paint coverage (in square meters per liter), and the number of coats desired. The calculator also considers the available can sizes (such as 0.5 L, 1 L, 3.6 L, 18 L) to tell you how many cans to buy.

The calculation is straightforward: first, divide the area by the coverage to get the liters needed for one coat. Multiply that by the number of coats. Then divide the total liters by the chosen can size and round up (ceiling function) to determine the number of cans. For example, for a 50 m² area, coverage of 10 m²/L, and 2 coats, you need 10 liters; with 3.6 L cans, you'll need 3 cans (rounded up from 2.78).

Use this calculator when planning to paint walls, ceilings, furniture, or any surface. It helps avoid waste and insufficient purchases. It's useful for renovations, decoration, DIY projects, and painting budgets. Remember to measure the area correctly (height x width of each wall, subtracting doors and windows) and check the coverage stated on the paint can.

Cautions: actual coverage may vary depending on surface porosity, paint type, tool (roller, brush, spray), and applicator skill. Highly absorbent or textured surfaces may require more paint. Always buy one extra can for touch-ups or unforeseen needs. The calculator provides an estimate; consult a professional for large or special projects.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the area to be painted?

Measure the height and width of each wall, multiply to get area in m². Sum all areas and subtract the area of doors and windows (about 1.5 m² per door and 1.2 m² per window).

What is paint coverage and where do I find it?

Coverage is how many square meters a liter of paint covers. It is printed on the can, usually between 8 and 14 m²/L per coat.

How many coats should I apply?

Usually two coats for even coverage. Dark colors or very light surfaces may require three. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation.

Can I use the calculator for floor paint or texture?

Yes, as long as you know the specific coverage of the floor paint or texture. The formula is the same.

What if I buy cans of different sizes?

The calculator considers a single can size per calculation. If you want to mix sizes, calculate separately or use the most common size.
