Historical reconstruction of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and modern efforts to recreate its grandeur.
About this subject
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was built between 280 and 247 BC on the island of Pharos near the port of Alexandria, Egypt. Standing about 130 meters tall, it was one of the tallest man-made structures ever created and guided ships along the Mediterranean coast for over 1,500 years. Its construction was commissioned by Ptolemy I and completed by his son Ptolemy II, using limestone and granite blocks. The lighthouse consisted of three sections: a square base, an intermediate octagon, and a cylindrical top, where a flame reflected by bronze mirrors projected light up to 50 kilometers away.
The structure survived earthquakes over the centuries but was severely damaged in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the late 15th century, the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay built a fortress on the site using the lighthouse's stones, which still stands today. Since the 20th century, various reconstruction proposals have emerged, including architectural and digital projects aiming to recreate the original appearance based on ancient descriptions and Roman coins. In 2015, the Egyptian government announced plans to rebuild the lighthouse near the original site as part of a tourism and cultural project.
Reconstructing the Pharos is not merely an architectural exercise but also a way to revive the memory of one of the greatest achievements of Hellenistic engineering. The lighthouse inspired the construction of other signal towers around the world, and its name gave rise to the word 'pharos' in many languages, meaning lighthouse. Although reconstruction proposals face challenges such as lack of precise records and high costs, they continue to fascinate historians and tourists interested in lost wonders.
