The Kuiper Belt, also known as the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt, is a vast disk-shaped region beyond the orbit of Neptune, extending roughly between 30 and 50 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. The first Kuiper Belt object after Pluto was discovered in 1992 by David Jewitt and Jane Luu, designated 1992 QB1. Missions such as NASA's New Horizons, which flew by Pluto in 2015 and then the object Arrokoth (2014 MU69) in 2019, have provided valuable data on the composition and dynamics of these distant bodies. The belt is also the source of short-period comets, such as Comet Halley, which are ejected into the inner Solar System due to gravitational interactions.
Interestingly, the Kuiper Belt extends beyond 50 AU into a region called the scattered disk, which contains objects with highly elliptical and inclined orbits.
