The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula located in the constellation Orion, approximately 1,375 light-years from Earth. It is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a vast star-forming region that also includes the Orion Nebula (M42) and Barnard's Loop. Its iconic horse-head shape is created by a dense cloud of interstellar dust that blocks light from the bright emission nebula behind it, IC 434. This silhouette was first detected on photographic plates in the late 19th century but gained worldwide fame after being captured in high resolution by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2013, which revealed delicate wisps and structures within the dust.
