Grasshoppers are insects of the order Orthoptera, recognized for their long hind legs adapted for jumping and their ecological importance as herbivores and prey.

About this subject

Grasshoppers belong to the order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera, and are found worldwide except in polar regions. There are over 11,000 described species, ranging from tiny insects a few millimeters long to large species like the American grasshopper (Schistocerca americana), which can reach 8 cm in length. These insects are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, stems, and seeds, and play a crucial role in food webs as prey for birds, reptiles, and mammals.

A distinctive feature of grasshoppers is their ability to jump great distances thanks to elastic femoral muscles. Additionally, males produce characteristic sounds by rubbing their forewings against their hind legs, a process called stridulation, used to attract females. Interestingly, the auditory organs of grasshoppers are located on the sides of the first abdominal segment, not on the head.

In Brazil, species such as the field grasshopper (Rhammatocerus schistocercoides) are occasional pests in soybean and corn crops, but most species do not cause significant economic damage. In contrast, in Africa and the Middle East, the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) can form devastating swarms that affect food security. These mass migrations occur when favorable environmental conditions, such as heavy rainfall, trigger behavioral and physiological changes in the insects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a grasshopper and a cricket?

Both are orthopterans, but grasshoppers belong to the suborder Caelifera and have short antennae, while crickets are Ensifera and have long antennae. Additionally, crickets are omnivorous and sing by rubbing their wings together, whereas grasshoppers are herbivorous and stridulate using their legs.

Can grasshoppers fly?

Most species have well-developed wings and fly to escape predators or migrate. Species like the desert locust form swarms that travel hundreds of kilometers.

How long does a grasshopper live?

The lifespan varies by species, but most live 3 to 6 months as adults. The total life cycle, including egg and nymph stages, can reach one year in species with diapause.
