Château d'Yquem, the legendary sweet white wine from Sauternes, is considered the world's finest, made in Bordeaux from botrytized grapes.

About this subject

Château d'Yquem is an iconic wine from the Sauternes region in Bordeaux, France. Since the official classification of 1855, it holds the unique title of Premier Cru Supérieur, above the premiers crus. The estate, with about 100 hectares of vineyards, mainly grows Sémillon (around 80%) and Sauvignon Blanc. The secret of its nectar lies in Botrytis cinerea, a noble rot that dehydrates the grapes, concentrating sugars and aromas.

Production is extremely labor-intensive: grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes (tries) throughout the autumn, selecting only bunches perfectly affected by noble rot. Yields are very low, about one glass of wine per vine. Fermentation occurs in new oak barrels, followed by aging for 18 to 24 months. The result is a wine of intense golden color, with aromas of honey, apricot, candied fruit, saffron, and woody notes.

On the palate, Château d'Yquem is extraordinarily sweet but balanced by a vibrant acidity that gives freshness and longevity. Wines from great vintages can age for over a century. Each bottle is numbered, and the wine is sold in 750 ml bottles, as well as half-bottles and magnums. The high price reflects not only quality but also rarity and history.

Classic pairings include foie gras, but it also goes well with blue cheeses like Roquefort and fruit- or cream-based desserts. It can be enjoyed alone as a meditation wine. Château d'Yquem represents the pinnacle of sweet wine viticulture, a symbol of luxury and tradition that delights connoisseurs worldwide.
