Voyager 1 is a robotic space probe of NASA's Voyager program, launched on September 5, 1977, just 16 days after its twin Voyager 2. Although launched later, Voyager 1 followed a faster trajectory and reached Jupiter and Saturn before Voyager 2. Its primary mission was to study the Jupiter and Saturn systems, including their moons and rings. During its flyby of Jupiter in 1979, it discovered volcanic activity on Io, a phenomenon never before observed. At Saturn, it revealed intricate details of the rings and the moon Titan, which has a thick atmosphere.
