pharos alexandria reconstruction in editorial style

Reconstruction of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which guided ships in the Egyptian harbor.

About this subject

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was one of the most iconic structures of antiquity. Built on the island of Pharos at the entrance to the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt, around 280 BC during the reign of Ptolemy II, the lighthouse stood about 130 meters tall, making it the tallest man-made structure for many centuries. Its light, produced by a flame reflected by polished bronze mirrors, could be seen from over 50 kilometers away, providing safe night navigation for ships approaching the busy port.

The structure was built with large stone and marble blocks, divided into three sections: a square base, a middle octagonal section, and a cylindrical top section where the flame was housed. The lighthouse withstood earthquakes for centuries, but was severely damaged by tremors between the 10th and 14th centuries. In 1480, the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay used the ruins of the lighthouse to build a fortress on the same site, which still exists today.

Various reconstructions of the lighthouse have been proposed over the years. In 2015, UNESCO considered a project to reconstruct the lighthouse as part of the revitalization of the Alexandria port area, but the plan did not move forward. There are also digital models and museum maquettes that recreate the appearance of the lighthouse. Underwater archaeological studies in the Bay of Alexandria have revealed blocks and statues from the ancient lighthouse, helping to understand its engineering. The reconstruction of the Pharos remains a symbol of the desire to recover one of the greatest works of Hellenistic engineering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the Lighthouse of Alexandria considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

Due to its exceptional height (about 130 meters), advanced engineering, and its vital role as a navigational guide for the busiest port in the Mediterranean for centuries.

When and how was the Lighthouse of Alexandria destroyed?

It was gradually damaged by earthquakes, especially between the 10th and 14th centuries. In 1480, its stones were reused to build the Qaitbay Fortress on the same site.

Is there any current plan to rebuild the Lighthouse of Alexandria?

Proposals have been made, such as one by UNESCO in 2015, but no concrete project has been implemented. Full reconstruction is considered unlikely due to archaeological and financial concerns.
