The Oort Cloud is a hypothetical spherical cloud of icy bodies surrounding the solar system at distances between 2,000 and 200,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. This region represents the gravitational boundary of the solar system, where the Sun's influence is still enough to keep objects in orbit but weak enough that perturbations from nearby stars or galactic tides can send these bodies toward the inner system. It is believed to contain trillions of objects larger than 1 km in diameter, composed mainly of water ice, methane, ethane, and carbon monoxide.

Comets originating from the Oort Cloud, called long-period comets, have extremely elongated orbits and orbital periods ranging from hundreds to millions of years. Famous examples include Comet Hale-Bopp, discovered in 1995, and Comet Hyakutake in 1996. Unlike short-period comets, which come from the Kuiper Belt, these comets can appear from any direction in the sky because the Oort Cloud is spherical. As they approach the Sun, heat sublimates their ices, forming a coma and a visible tail.

The existence of the Oort Cloud was proposed by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort in 1950 to explain the origin of long-period comets. Although never directly observed, its presence is inferred from the orbits of these comets. Recent studies suggest the Oort Cloud may have two components: an inner disk-shaped cloud (closer) and an outer spherical cloud. The Voyager 1 probe, launched in 1977, is currently traveling toward the Oort Cloud and should reach it in about 300 years, carrying the Golden Record with information about humanity.

Interestingly, the Oort Cloud is not unique to our solar system. Other star systems may possess similar clouds, and interactions between Oort Clouds of neighboring stars can exchange comets. Events like the passage of a nearby star can perturb the cloud and increase the frequency of comets in the inner solar system, which has been proposed as an explanation for mass extinctions on Earth, such as the Permian-Triassic event, though this hypothesis is controversial.
