Mount Rushmore, an American national monument, showcases the carved faces of four U.S. presidents in granite.
About this subject
Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills region of Keystone, South Dakota, United States. The sculpture was carved between 1927 and 1941 under the direction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It depicts Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, chosen to represent the birth, growth, development, and preservation of the United States.
Each face is about 60 feet (18 meters) tall, carved directly into the granite rock. Around 400 workers used dynamite and hand tools to remove approximately 450,000 tons of rock. The project cost nearly one million dollars at the time, funded mainly by the federal government and private donations. Although the original plan included full torsos, lack of funds halted the project.
The site holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for Native American peoples, especially the Lakota, who consider the Black Hills sacred ground. The Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868) originally granted the region to the tribes, but the discovery of gold led to invasions and conflicts. Today, Mount Rushmore is one of the most visited national parks in the U.S., attracting over 2 million tourists each year.
