The Statue of Unity in Gujarat is the world's tallest statue at 182 meters, honoring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his role in unifying India.
About this subject
The Statue of Unity, located in the Narmada district of Gujarat, is a colossal monument dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a key independence leader and India's first Deputy Prime Minister. Inaugurated on October 31, 2018, on Patel's birth anniversary, the statue stands 182 meters tall, surpassing the Spring Temple Buddha in China. It is situated on the banks of the Narmada River near the Sardar Sarovar Dam, chosen because it is Patel's birthplace. The project was executed by Indian company Larsen & Toubro, designed by sculptor Ram V. Sutar, and cost approximately ₹2,989 crores (about US$400 million).
The statue symbolizes national unity, honoring Patel's crucial role in integrating over 550 princely states into independent India. For its construction, used farming tools collected from farmers across India were melted and recycled into part of the bronze cladding. Inside, the statue houses a museum dedicated to Patel's life and a viewing gallery at 153 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the dam and the Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges.
Culturally, the monument has become a major tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually. The structure is engineered to withstand winds up to 180 km/h and earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale. High-speed elevators take visitors to the observation deck in under a minute. Beyond tourism, the site stimulates regional development through infrastructure improvements and job creation.
