The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was built between 280 and 247 BC on the island of Pharos near the port of Alexandria, Egypt. Designed by the architect Sostratus of Cnidus, it reached between 100 and 130 meters in height, making it one of the tallest structures of the ancient world. Its purpose was to guide ships into the harbor, using fire reflected by polished bronze mirrors, visible up to 50 km away. The lighthouse survived for centuries but was severely damaged by earthquakes in the 14th and 15th centuries, especially the 1303 tremor that destroyed most of the structure. Remnants were reused in the construction of the Qaitbay Fortress in the 15th century.
