The Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, reconstructed in modern representations revealing its architectural grandeur.
About this subject
Built on the island of Pharos in the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt, around 280 BC under Ptolemy II, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was a limestone tower about 130 meters tall. At its top, a fire fueled by wood or oil was reflected by polished metal mirrors, casting light visible for more than 50 kilometers. It was one of the tallest man-made structures of antiquity, surpassing the Great Pyramid of Giza in height. Its construction required years of labor and advanced engineering skills, blending nautical function with political monument.
Beyond guiding ships, the lighthouse symbolized the power and wealth of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Its design influenced the architecture of signal towers across the Mediterranean. The shimmering light, produced by burning materials, was amplified by a system of curved mirrors, allowing ships at great distances to identify the port of Alexandria. The lighthouse also served as a defensive fortification, with troops stationed to protect the city's entrance.
The structure suffered progressive damage from earthquakes in the 10th, 12th, and 14th centuries, eventually collapsing completely. In the 15th century, the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay built a fortress over the ruins, reusing the lighthouse's stones. In 1994, underwater archaeologists discovered blocks, statues, and foundation remains on the harbor floor. Modern reconstructions, such as that by historian Hermann Thiersch, rely on historical accounts from Arab travelers and Roman coins to recreate the three-tier silhouette: a square base, an octagonal midsection, and a cylindrical top.
