The Oort cloud is a hypothetical spherical cloud of icy bodies surrounding the solar system at a distance of 2,000 to 200,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, extending nearly a light-year away. The Oort cloud is believed to consist of trillions of cometary nuclei, leftovers from the formation of giant planets.
