The hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device that uses magnetic platters to store data. Each platter is a circular disk made of aluminum or glass, coated with a thin layer of magnetic material such as a cobalt-chromium-platinum alloy. During operation, the platter spins at speeds ranging from 5,400 to 15,000 RPM (revolutions per minute), while read/write heads float nanometers above the surface, never touching it, to read or alter the magnetism of the particles.

HDD evolution has been driven by increasing areal storage density. In 1956, the first HDD (IBM 350) stored 5 MB on 50 24-inch disks. Today, a 3.5-inch HDD can reach 20 TB or more, thanks to technologies like perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The exposed platter surface appears mirror-like due to the extremely fine polishing required for the head to fly without contact. Any dust particle or scratch can cause a catastrophic head crash.

Although SSDs are replacing HDDs in many devices, hard drives still dominate in data centers and backup applications because of lower cost per gigabyte. However, their mechanical fragility and sensitivity to vibration make them less suitable for mobile devices. Exposing a platter, as in the image, is common in forensic repairs or data recovery, where the drive is opened in a cleanroom (class 100) to replace damaged components.
