Platters are the rigid disks inside hard disk drives that store data magnetically. Inside an HDD, the environment is virtually particle-free, with filtered air and controlled pressure. Exposing a platter to ambient air, as shown in the image, is extremely harmful: dust and moisture can adhere to the surface and destroy the magnetic layer, rendering the drive inoperable. Consequently, HDDs are assembled in cleanrooms (ISO Class 5 or higher) and should never be opened by ordinary users.
