The Globe Theatre, stage for William Shakespeare's works, was one of the most important theaters of the Elizabethan era in London.
About this subject
The Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, using timber from the earlier Theatre. Located in Southwark on the south bank of the Thames, it was an open-air amphitheater with three tiers of galleries and capacity for about 3,000 spectators. Its circular shape and lack of artificial lighting forced performances to take place during daylight.
The original theatre was destroyed by a fire on June 29, 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, when a cannon used for special effects ignited the thatched roof. Rebuilt in 1614, it was closed by the Puritans in 1642 and demolished in 1644. A modern replica, Shakespeare's Globe, opened in 1997 just a few hundred meters from the original site, using historical plans and Elizabethan construction techniques.
Shakespeare wrote and premiered plays such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Othello at the Globe. The theatre became an icon of English drama and now attracts about one million visitors annually. The current structure retains the thatched roof (fireproofed), the thrust stage, and standing room for 1,400 spectators in the yard, recreating the Elizabethan audience experience.
