About this calculator
The Monthly Detergent Calculator estimates liquid detergent needs based on household size and washing frequency. It uses an average of 500 mL per person per month, adjusted for how often clothes are washed. Ideal for budgeting, reducing waste, and cost management.
It multiplies the number of people by 500 mL and the number of washes per month. For example: 4 people washing 10 times/month need 4 * 500 mL * 10 = 20 liters. Results may vary with detergent concentration and washer type (manual/automatic).
Use this tool to: a) Plan home budgets, b) Compare detergent brands by efficiency, c) Adjust usage for high-washing households. Add 10-20% extra as a safety margin for unexpected needs.
Notes: Doesn't account for powder detergents, which have different concentrations. For enzymes or eco-friendly detergents, check the label as dosing varies. Modern washers use less product in eco cycles.
Frequently asked questions
Why 500 mL per person?
This represents average use for 1-2 weekly washes in standard households. Adjust based on usage intensity.
How to account for extra washes?
Multiply the final result by additional washes. Example: 20 washes becomes 25 by multiplying by 1.25.
Works for all detergent types?
Only for liquid detergents. Powders have different concentrations requiring specific conversions.
How to convert mL to liters?
Divide total mL by 1000. Example: 3000 mL = 3 liters.
