About this calculator

The Residential Electricity Calculator estimates monthly consumption in kWh and the electricity bill amount based on the appliances you use at home. Simply enter the appliance power (in watts), how many hours per day it is on, and how many days per month. The tool calculates total consumption and, if you enter the energy tariff (R$/kWh), also shows the approximate cost. This helps identify which equipment most impacts your bill.

The calculation is straightforward: first convert power from watts to kilowatts (divide by 1000). Then multiply by daily usage hours and days in the month to get consumption in kWh. For example, a 5500 W shower used 30 minutes daily for 30 days consumes (5500/1000) × 0.5 × 30 = 82.5 kWh. Multiplying by the tariff (e.g., R$ 0.80/kWh) gives a cost of R$ 66.00 per month. You can simulate different appliances.

Use this calculator for household budget planning, comparing old versus new energy-efficient appliances, or deciding whether to reduce usage time of certain equipment. It is also useful for sizing solar energy systems, as total kWh consumption is the basis for the project. Businesses can use it to estimate consumption in offices or small retail spaces.

Important precautions: check the actual power rating (usually on the label or manual), as nominal values may vary. Consider that motor-driven appliances (refrigerator, air conditioner) cycle on and off, so usage time should be an average. The energy tariff varies by region and tariff flag (green, yellow, red). Update the tariff with the value from your latest bill for greater accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the power of my appliance?

The power in watts is on the product label, manual, or packaging. For appliances without this info, you can use typical values (e.g., shower 5500 W, refrigerator 200 W).

What is the tariff flag and how does it affect the calculation?

The tariff flag is an extra charge that varies with energy generation costs. It can increase the kWh price. In the calculation, you should add this fee to the base tariff from your utility.

Can I use the calculator for appliances not used every day?

Yes. Just adjust the 'days per month' field to the actual usage. For example, an iron used 2 times per week is about 8 days per month.

Does the calculator consider taxes like ICMS?

No. The calculated cost is only consumption times tariff. The final bill includes taxes (ICMS, PIS/COFINS) and public lighting fees, which can be added separately.

How do I find the energy tariff for my region?

Check your electricity bill: it shows the kWh value (often labeled 'Energy Tariff' or 'TE'). You can also visit your utility's website or ANEEL.
