About this calculator

This calculator determines the physical dimensions (width and height) of a screen based on its diagonal in inches and aspect ratio. Results are shown in centimeters and inches, making it easy to visualize the actual display size. It helps compare monitors, TVs, or projectors before purchase, ensuring the chosen model fits the available space.

The calculation uses a formula based on the Pythagorean theorem. Given the diagonal (d) and aspect ratio (ratio = width/height), width = d * ratio / √(ratio² + 1) and height = d / √(ratio² + 1). For example, a 55-inch screen with a 16:9 ratio yields about 121.8 cm width and 68.5 cm height. The user must input the diagonal and ratio in "width:height" format (e.g., 16:9).

Use this calculator when planning to install a TV, monitor, or projector, or when comparing devices with different aspect ratios. For instance, when choosing between a 16:9 TV and a 21:9 ultrawide monitor, real dimensions help decide which fits your furniture or wall. It is also useful for home theater setups or adjusting the field of view in gaming configurations.

Caveats: the diagonal must be the actual screen diagonal (corner to corner), excluding bezels. The aspect ratio must be entered correctly (e.g., 16:9, 21:9, 4:3). The result is the viewable area, not the device's total size. For spaces with width or height constraints, measure the location before buying.

Frequently asked questions

How to measure the screen diagonal correctly?

Measure from one bottom corner to the opposite top corner, considering only the viewable area, excluding the bezel.

What is aspect ratio?

It is the ratio of width to height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9). It indicates the image shape.

Can I use this calculator for projectors?

Yes, as long as you know the diagonal of the projected image and the projector's native aspect ratio.

What is the difference between inches and centimeters in the results?

Both units are provided for convenience. 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters.

Does the calculator consider bezels?

No. The result refers only to the viewable screen area, disregarding borders or bezels of the device.
