About this calculator

The Dripping Faucet Calculator estimates the water wasted by a leak and the extra cost on your water bill. You enter how many drops per minute the faucet drips and the water rate (per cubic meter). The tool calculates daily waste in liters, annual waste in cubic meters, and the extra cost. The calculation uses 0.05 mL per drop. The result helps you understand the financial and environmental impact of a small leak.

How to use: measure how many drops fall in one minute (use a timer) and fill in the field. Enter your local water rate (usually on your bill). The calculator shows daily, monthly, and annual waste. It also shows the extra annual cost. If multiple faucets leak, add the drops or calculate separately. It is best to fix the leak as soon as possible, as even one drop per second can waste over 1,500 liters per year.

Cautions: the estimate assumes constant dripping. If the faucet drips only occasionally, actual waste may be lower. Water rates vary by consumption tier and city. Some areas have progressive rates (the more you use, the higher the rate). The calculated cost is an approximation. For better accuracy, use the average rate or check your bill. Remember: the greatest benefit of fixing the leak is environmental, reducing waste of clean water.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters per day can a dripping faucet waste?

A faucet dripping 60 drops per minute (1 per second) wastes about 4.3 liters per day, or 1,577 liters per year.

How do I measure the drip rate of my faucet?

Use a timer to count how many drops fall in 30 seconds, then multiply by 2 to get drops per minute. Measure with the faucet in the usual leaking position.

Is the calculated cost accurate?

No, it is an estimate. Actual cost depends on your exact water rate and consumption tier. Check your water bill for more precise values.

What if the faucet drips only when the water is on?

In that case, waste is lower. Consider the average daily use time. The calculator assumes continuous dripping.

Is it worth fixing a small leak?

Yes. A leak of 10 drops per minute wastes 2,629 liters per year. The repair cost is low, and the savings on your bill and the environment are worth it.
