About this calculator
The Relegation Calculator helps fans and analysts assess a soccer team's risk of being relegated in a round-robin tournament. It calculates the maximum points the team can achieve in the remaining rounds, considering each win gives 3 points, and compares it to a safety target, usually the points of the 16th place (or a historical value like 45 points).
The operation is simple: starting from the team's current points, add the number of remaining rounds multiplied by 3 (maximum possible points). If this total is less than the safety target, the team has no mathematical chance of survival. Otherwise, the difference between the target and current points is calculated, indicating how many points are still needed to reach safety.
Use this calculator at critical moments of the season, such as after important defeats or when few rounds remain. It helps understand if the situation is reversible or if relegation is almost certain. Remember that the safety target may vary by league; for example, in the Brazilian Serie A with 20 teams, the historical average is 45 points, but in editions with 24 teams the number may be higher.
Cautions: the calculator only considers maximum points, ignoring goal difference and head-to-head results, which can be tiebreakers. Also, the safety target is an estimate; actual relegation depends on other teams' performance. It does not replace deeper analysis from mathematicians or specialized websites.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal safety score?
Usually 45 points for 20-team leagues, but the exact number is the 16th place points at the moment. Check the current standings.
What if the team can still reach the target but depends on other results?
The calculator shows only the maximum potential. If the target is reachable, there is still a chance, but it depends on wins and opponents' stumbles.
Why is goal difference not considered?
Goal difference is a tiebreaker, but the calculator focuses on points. In case of a tie, goal difference may decide, but that is a more complex analysis.
Can I use it for 24-team leagues?
Yes, but adjust the safety target. In leagues with more teams, the safety score is usually higher, e.g., 50 points.
What does 'maximum points' mean?
It is the total points the team would have if it won all remaining games. It serves to check if there is still a mathematical chance to survive.
