About this calculator

The Biodiversity Yard Score calculator evaluates the ecological health of a green space on a 1-10 scale, based on three key factors: native plant coverage, habitat structure, and organic soil percentage. The result is calculated by summing (Number of native species ÷ 5) + (Habitat structure × 0.5) + (Organic soil percentage ÷ 20).

It is designed for urban gardeners, sustainable landscaping projects, or residents aiming to assess the environmental impact of small spaces. The formula emphasizes local plant diversity, ecosystem complexity (such as vegetation in multiple layers), and soil health, which directly affect insects, birds, and small mammals.

To ensure accuracy, include only region-native plants and avoid synthetic pesticides. Spaces with continuous vegetation and nutrient-rich soil typically score higher. Artificial elements like decorative objects or fake grass are not considered in the calculation.

Recalculate periodically as seasonal vegetation changes. This score provides initial guidance but cannot replace professional ecological analysis for areas of high environmental significance.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high score mean?

A score above 8 indicates excellent native species diversity and structured habitat. Below 4, the space likely has low biodiversity or relies on non-native plants.

Can I include non-native plants?

Exotic plants don't count in the calculation but may be added if they attract local pollinators. Avoid invasive species that compete with native flora.

How to improve habitat structure?

Create vegetation layers (trees, shrubs, grasses), alternate shaded and sunny areas, and add elements like fallen logs or rocks for shelters.

Do I need to measure organic soil percentage?

Yes. Use a pH meter or visually assess: dark, fertile soil with organic material (like decomposed leaves) indicates higher scores.
