Feather quill and ink were the primary writing tools for centuries before the fountain pen and ballpoint pen.

The feather quill, or calamus, was the dominant writing instrument in the West from the 6th to the mid-19th century. Typically taken from the wings of geese, swans, or crows, the quill was cut at the tip with a penknife to form a nib that held ink by capillary action. Iron gall ink, made from ferrous sulfate, oak galls, and gum arabic, was the most common because it was permanent and water-resistant. Writing with a quill required skill: pressure varied to create thin or thick strokes, and the nib needed constant resharpening.

Historical manuscripts, from the Magna Carta to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, were written with quills. The manufacturing process involved curing the quills in hot sand to harden them, then cutting the tip and making a cross-cut (slit) to regulate ink flow. Each quill lasted only a few pages before needing retouching. The mass production of metal nibs in the 19th century, combined with industrial inks, gradually replaced bird quills, but quill calligraphy is still practiced as an art.

Interestingly, the English word 'pen' originally meant 'feather,' derived from Latin 'penna.' In Brazil, quill use was common until the end of the Empire, with quills imported from Europe. India ink, made from carbon black and shellac, was also used for technical drawings and oriental calligraphy, but iron gall ink prevailed in the West. Today, historical reenactors and lettering enthusiasts still use real quills for authenticity.
