The Oort Cloud is a theoretical region of the Solar System, located between 2,000 and 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. It is a remnant of the protosolar nebula, composed of billions of icy objects, such as primordial planetesimals. Unlike the Kuiper Belt, which is closer and flatter, the Oort Cloud is spherical and envelops the entire Solar System. Its formation is believed to have occurred in the early stages of the Solar System when gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn scattered debris into distant orbits through gravitational interactions.

Comets originating from the Oort Cloud, called long-period comets, take thousands or even millions of years to complete an orbit around the Sun. When a gravitational perturbation, such as the passage of a nearby star or galactic tidal waves, pushes one of these bodies into the inner Solar System, it heats up and develops a characteristic coma and tail. The existence of the Oort Cloud was proposed by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort in 1950 to explain the origin of long-period comets. Although it has not been directly observed due to its vast distance and low luminosity, its existence is widely accepted by the scientific community. It is estimated that the Oort Cloud contains more than a trillion cometary nuclei and that its total mass is a few dozen Earth masses. Space missions like New Horizons, after visiting Pluto, are being directed to study trans-Neptunian objects and possibly provide clues about the structure of the edge of our planetary system.
