The Oort cloud is a vast spherical shell of icy debris surrounding the Solar System at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. Unlike the closer Kuiper Belt, the Oort cloud remains hypothetical, never directly observed, but its existence is inferred from the trajectories of comets entering the inner solar system.
