The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, symbolizing German unity and peace.
About this subject
The Brandenburg Gate was built between 1788 and 1791 on the orders of King Frederick William II of Prussia. The design was by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, inspired by the Propylaea of the Acropolis in Athens. The structure stands 26 meters high, 65.5 meters wide, and 11 meters deep, with five passages: the central one was reserved for royalty and royal carriages. At the top, the Quadriga, a copper statue depicting the goddess Victoria in a chariot pulled by four horses, was added in 1793. During the Napoleonic Wars, in 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte took the Quadriga to Paris as a trophy, but it was returned after the French defeat in 1814, when it was crowned with the Iron Cross. In the 20th century, the gate witnessed historic events such as the Nazi takeover in 1933, partial destruction during World War II, and the division of Berlin during the Cold War, when it stood isolated in the 'death strip' between the walls. After German reunification in 1990, the Brandenburg Gate became the main symbol of overcoming division and today is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Germany, also hosting celebrations such as New Year's Eve and concerts.
