About this calculator

The ABSI (Body Shape Index) Calculator is a tool that assesses mortality risk associated with body fat distribution. Unlike BMI, which only considers weight and height, ABSI takes waist circumference into account, adjusted for BMI and height. This helps identify individuals with excess abdominal fat, even with normal BMI, who have higher risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The ABSI calculation uses the formula: ABSI = waist (m) / (BMI^(2/3) × height^(1/2)). BMI is first calculated as weight (kg) / height² (m). Then, ABSI is obtained by dividing waist by the product of BMI raised to 2/3 and height raised to 1/2. The result is a dimensionless number, usually between 0.05 and 0.10, which can be compared to reference values by age and sex.

When to use? ABSI is useful to complement BMI assessment in health check-ups, especially for people with normal BMI who want to check for abdominal fat accumulation. It is also used in epidemiological studies to stratify mortality risk. Athletes or very muscular individuals may have high BMI without excess fat, but ABSI helps differentiate.

Cautions: Waist measurement should be taken at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the iliac crest, with a non-elastic tape, after normal expiration. ABSI is not a standalone diagnosis; consult a doctor for interpretation. Ethnic variations may affect the relationship between ABSI and risk. The calculator provides only the numerical value, without automatic classification.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high ABSI mean?

A high ABSI indicates greater abdominal fat concentration relative to your BMI and height, which is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality.

What is a normal ABSI value?

There is no single normal value; ABSI is interpreted via percentiles adjusted for age and sex. Values above the 90th percentile are considered high risk.

Does ABSI replace BMI?

No, ABSI complements BMI. While BMI assesses general obesity, ABSI focuses on fat distribution, which is an independent risk factor.

How to measure waist correctly?

Measure the circumference at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, with the tape horizontal, after normal expiration. Do not compress the skin.

Does ABSI work for children?

ABSI was developed for adults. For children, specific reference curves exist, but use is less common. Consult a pediatrician.
